Never Forget

Pray for Texas

I am simply at a loss for words as I’ve watched with bated breath the news reports over the last 2 1/2 days reporting the devastating results of what some are a calling an inland tsunami.

Tremendous amounts of rain have been dumped in the Texas Hill Country that resulted in numerous watersheds rising by more than 25 feet in under an hour. And the rain continues to fall. Being the 4th of July weekend, there were large numbers of people camping in parks all along the rivers. And there are many summer camps for kiddos situated along the river banks, as well. Waters rose swiftly in the darkness and most of those who were swept away simply didn’t have time to react and move to safety in time. The search for the missing, including children, is ongoing.

Two things about this tragedy hit home for me. First, as a parent, I simply cannot image receiving the call that my child is unaccounted for and then anxiously waiting as rescuers search by air, land, and water for those who are missing. The uncertainty. The fear. It’s all just too much to contemplate.

And then my thoughts turn to those first responders—those who have left the safety of home to put their lives on the line to search for the missing. My brother is former DPS and often got called to these emergencies. What these teams are seeing. What they’re feeling as they find the missing. It’s just unfathomable.

In light of this, I just couldn’t bring myself to create anything to share with all of you. My heart and my head just aren’t in it.

If you can, please donate to help all of those who have been affected. The Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the United Methodist Corps on Relief (UMCOR), and your local relief organizations are great places to start. But more than anything else, please pray for Texas as the rain continues to fall over the Hill Country!
